Peter Hürzeler: Charting the Course of Nautical Excellence
Early Childhood and Initial Connection to Sailing
Peter Hürzeler's journey began in Switzerland, a landlocked country seemingly distant from oceanic adventures. Yet, at just 12 years old, young Peter experienced his first profound connection to the sea during family sailing trips across the Baltic and Mediterranean. These formative expeditions ignited an enduring passion, embedding the rhythms of sailing deep into his heart and setting the compass for a lifelong maritime journey.
Journey to Nautical Success
Initially trained in law, Peter soon felt the irresistible call of the open ocean. At age 21, driven by his maritime aspirations, he became a merchant deck officer aboard Dutch commercial vessels, gaining not only invaluable global seafaring experience but also a Dutch Master Mariner qualification. These early adventures laid the robust foundation for his ambitious career.
Peter’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch the groundbreaking COLOMBAIO project in 1985—a visionary undertaking in yacht chartering. The 120-foot sailing yacht, constructed in Holland, was among the first commercially certified luxury charter yachts of its era. As captain, Peter steered COLOMBAIO through numerous successful seasons, blending professionalism with unparalleled elegance and style, and establishing a new standard within the charter industry.
Major Career Achievements
In 1991, driven by a vision to redefine yacht management and brokerage, Peter founded Ocean Cruise in Zürich. His strategic foresight culminated in 2005 when he masterfully orchestrated the merger of Ocean Cruise with Sea Independence and Velonà Yachting to form Ocean Independence. Under Peter’s visionary leadership, Ocean Independence quickly rose to prominence, expanding into a global network with 16 offices worldwide and solidifying its reputation as a preeminent force in luxury yacht brokerage, chartering, and management.
Peter’s keen ability to identify and integrate successful partnerships was exemplified by the notable acquisitions of Cavendish White in 2008 and Primo Yacht in 2011, significantly extending Ocean Independence’s international reach and reinforcing its status at the pinnacle of the yachting world.
Personal Life and Broader Impact
Away from boardrooms and brokerage offices, Peter Hürzeler remains deeply anchored in family values. He shares his enduring passion for sailing with his family, particularly enjoying peaceful voyages along Croatia’s stunning coastline aboard their beloved 70-foot wooden yacht. His personal life mirrors his professional philosophy—grounded in integrity, authenticity, and an unwavering respect for nature.
Peter’s advocacy for sustainability underscores his commitment to preserving marine environments, promoting environmentally responsible practices throughout the yachting industry. Known for his humility, genuine warmth, and unwavering dedication to his clients' needs, Peter fosters relationships built on trust and honesty.
