Why Glacier Photography ?

#rethinking

C O N S I D E R Y O U R I M P A C T

For over a decade now I’ve been visiting and photographing the Aletsch Glacier, an important part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch Region – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At first I was simply amazed at its size and the fact that you could watch such a huge mass of ice slowly moving down the valley, not to mention the incredibly beautiful mountain scenery all around.

But during my first real glacier expedition, I also learned more about the fragility of this giant, even though back then,  "sustainability" or " conservation" were not the hot media topics they are today.

Today, I look at the glaciers as giant thermometers, and the mercury is steadily rising. Without mercy, they show us the consequences of climate change.

The glaciers serve as giant thermometers for our planet. Without mercy, they show us the consequences of climate change

And it's not just the Aletsch glacier, there are similar glaciers on all continents – and they’re just melting away before our eyes.

I’m no scientist, so it will never be my intention to explain this, even though I’ve read widely on the subject. All I can do as a photographer is to show the beauty and fragility of this natural habitat. Help me with this project.

There are many ways to share these images and messages with a wider audience. Internet and social media certainly provide  a valuable platform. But when I think about a picture being viewed on Instagram for 1.5 seconds, that's not enough. This sort of change demands more than 1.5 seconds of attention.

If I can inspire and motivate you with my pictures to make your life more sustainable, then my contribution will be to take more inspiring pictures of the world’s glaciers and show them to as many people as possible.

This is one of the most important things we can do for future generations.

As you can imagine, these journeys are costly and require serious preparation and organization. If you believe in this mission as strongly as I do, then you may wish to support this significant work. By purchasing a glacier fine art photo, you can contribute to the cost of these expeditions and help me bring their fragile beauty to the world’s attention.
