Venice's hidden corners: a look at the quiet side of the floating city in the Goose Magazine

Venice has always been a paradoxical city, its beauty and history juxtaposed with the constant hum of tourism. However, there are moments when the city's quiet soul emerges, and its hidden corners reveal stories that are often overlooked. This article in the International Goose nautical lifestyle magazine explores these quiet places and offers insights into a Venice that many tourists never get to see.

The recent pandemic brought significant change to Venice. As the city's canals fell silent and the bustling streets quieted, I had the rare opportunity to photograph Venice in a state of almost complete solitude. This unique moment allowed me to capture the beauty of a city that seemed to pause and reflect on its history.

These areas offer a glimpse into the daily lives of Venetians, untouched by the usual rush of visitors. This tranquillity fits in with an old Venetian saying: "I segreti più segreti di Venezia sono quelli che si custodiscono da soli." Translated, this means: "The best-kept secrets of Venice are those that keep themselves." This perfectly captures the essence of these hidden corners, which only reveal their charm to those who seek them out.

The well-known landmarks such as St. Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge took on a new aura without the crowds. In the absence of tourists, these iconic places seemed almost otherworldly, allowing their architectural splendor to come into its own in a way that is rarely experienced. The intricate details of the buildings, the play of light on the canals, and the distant echo of footsteps created an atmosphere that was both surreal and serene.
